Nomura fishing rods are high quality, powerful rods. Each rod has a carefully selected type of High Modulus Carbon, which is perfectly suited for the purpose of the rod. They also feature components specifically designed to withstand the stresses of Saltwater. To put it into simple terms….they’re Totally Awesome!

We had the opportunity to use and review three Nomura Rods: The Nomura Hiro 4-21g, Nomura ISEI 10-35g, and the Nomura Kanji 30-70g. All three rods got vigorously tested on a number of Wrasse up to 4lbs when we were fishing from the rocks in Torquay, Devon. You can see these rods being put to the test in the video at the bottom of this  review, be sure to check it out! Let’s start with the lightest rod we used, which is the Nomura Hiro.

Nomura Hiro

Nomura Hiro

The Hiro has a soft tip section but it still retains so much power

When it comes to rock fishing, I’m all about light tackle, small lures/bait, a light jig lead and hopefully, some awesome fish action. I do a lot of LRF (light rock fishing) involving rods with a casting weight of about 1-8grams. However, the Nomura Hiro I was using was more of an HRF (Heavy Rock Fishing) rod, with a casting weight of 4-21g. Now I used all three Nomura rods, but as soon as I started using this rod, I was hooked. Firstly, it’s around 8ft long. This was dead handy when fishing the mark that we did, the extra foot or so really helped me to wind fish in without the line catching on protruding rocks. The tip section of the rod is super sensitive, which gave me great bite detection. What excited me most was that the top section of this rod folded over even on the small wrasse. Yet the middle to lower section still retained so much power, which helped me to bully the bigger fish and prevent them crash diving to the snags. The blank itself is super lightweight due to the 30T carbon build, which is important when you are fishing all day with it and travelling over rocks for hours to get to the right mark. I think this rod will be ideal when using ultra light jig heads and lures, casting into deep gulleys and rock pools. Personally, I think this rod can also be great for dropshotting. It has the extra length to enable more precise casting, but the tip section will enable me to make very small movements to the lure and help entice a Perch take. Overall, I really rate this blank. I think it’s great value for money and it comes in a variety of different lengths and casting weights. Personally I think the 4-21g casting weight is spot on for rock fishing for Wrasse and Pollack.

Nomura ISEI

Nomura ISEI

The biggest fish of the day put an Awesome bend in the ISEI!

The Nomura ISEI is a limited edition, quality carbon fibre blank. The material used to form this rod benefit from the use of 30T carbon and spigot joint in order to reach high rigidity, sensitivity and lightness. We really put this rod to the test on the rock fishing down in Devon. In fact, this rod landed one of the largest Wrasse of the day at 4lbs. When using this rod, both Graeme & myself agreed that this would be a killer rod for Pollack fishing off some of the inshore reefs and rocks that we fish in Ireland. It was an ideal length at 7 foot, and it had a casting weight of 10-35gm which would be perfect in conjunction with casting some of the sidewinder lures that have proved to be such successful Pollack and Cod lures for us over the years. However, on this day we were using it with a small 7-10gram weight and ragworm as bait. The tip was much more solid than the Hiro, but that was understandable given the higher casting weight. However, this rod still had a sensitive top section that would give great bite detection, yet still have the power to crank in bigger fish. Interestingly, the ISEI had more of a through-action, and you could feel the quality and power of the rod when battling with the big Wrasse. I used this rod on the second day that we fished out on the boat off Plymouth (see the video below), and it actually worked really well when dropping a set of feathers down for Pollack. It could handle the weight that we were using, and when a Pollack took the feathers, it was clear you were going to be in for a great fight! I personally think this can also be used on the freshwater scene as a light tackle Pike lure rod. The shorter length will give you much more power to handle bigger fish. A great quality rod that not only looks aesthetically awesome but has the power to back up the looks.

Nomura Kanji

Nomura Kanji

Graeme’s favourite – The white rod!

The Nomura Kanji was Graeme’s favourite rod of the day. Not only was this a unique looking rod, but it was seriously powerful and we will be putting this to further test on bigger fish. We used the 8ft version in 30-70gm casting weight. This eye-catching white rod is designed for the big fish and big lures. It is well designed, with a white EVA handle in three sections, a reinforced graphite reel seat and a modern pearly finish. It really did stand out (probably why Graeme chose to use this one so much). The rod is fitted with special saltwater guides and it has a powerful through-action. Graeme landed one of the bigger Wrasse on this rod quite comfortably. In fact, he went on to land many more Wrasse on this rod. Like the other Nomura rods, it had a light feel to it and a quality finish. We felt that this rod was incredibly good value for money, and it could really pack a punch! Check it out in action in the video below.
